It's that time, folks. Our buddy at Bama Sports Report hosts the questions this week. This is an interesting format; the first few questions remain the same, which makes it compelling to see the answers change as the season progresses. BSR adds their own to keep it interesting. On to the questions...
What are your feelings on Alabama’s current position in the polls? Are we overrated? Underrated? Just right?
We think 11 in the AP is a little high, but we'll take it. Something like 14th in the country is about right. Alabama at least had a very impressive win; Auburn is ranked higher, and has been completely unimpressive thus far.
What aspect of the game did Alabama control that shocked you the most? What aspect of the game was Alabama dominated in that shocked you the most?
It's hard to say Alabama dominated in any area of the game. That said, the Tide did a great job of keeping Tulane out of the end zone, despite being picked apart at times.
Clearly injuries played some part in the poor showing by the offensive line, but Alabama just couldn't get anything working on offense for most of the game. Relentless pressure by the Tulane defense kept John Parker Wilson on his heels, and the running game didn't get going until late in the game.
Name your player of the game on Offense. Also name one on Defense.
Tough call. Mark Ingram probably gets the nod by default, as there wasn't a lot to brag about on offense. Rolando McClain picks up the honor on defense, as he continues to grow into a stellar player.
John Parker Wilson has been called a number of things – most of them not so nice. What do you see in your crystal ball for #14 for the balance of the season?
Lord only knows. There are many variables involved in making a QB look good, despite what some message board coaches think. The offensive line has to block. The backs have to pick up blitzes. Receivers have to get open. Still, all things being equal, we think Alabama has the right offensive strategy in place for Wilson to thrive.
Considering that we rushed for 6.5 yards per carry against Tulane, and only averaged 1.6 yards on pass plays, why do you suppose that we passed 27 times and only ran 22 times?
It's an old cliche' that you pass to set up the run, and vice versa, but it's true. Alabama's retooled offense feature shorter routes and dump passes that, when completed, serve almost as running plays. Had we stopped passing, the Tulane defense would have pinned their ears back and shut down the run anyway.
